1,000 Mile Review: 2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT

The Top of the Line 2026 Subaru Outback

I’ve already compared the engine options offered in the new-generation 2026 Subaru Outback. Comparing the benefits of both the turbocharged 2.4L and naturally aspirated 2.5L Boxer engines. For this article I’ll be focusing on the top-tier variant, the 2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT. This is the model loaded with all the bells and whistles in terms of safety and performance. Although the Outback Wilderness offers slightly more off-road prowess with better ground clearance and rugged aesthetic. The Touring XT is built to be the premium all-rounder.

The official Subaru website, the 2026 Outback Touring XT starts at $47,995. The model featured in this article had an MSRP of $49,840 (destination charge included).

2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT Specs and Safety Features

As mentioned, the Subaru Outback Touring XT sits at the very top of the lineup. It comes loaded with a long list of safety features as standard that include:

  • Side Curtain Air Bags with Rollover Sensor
  • Reverse Automatic Braking System (RAB)
  • Driver Focus (Distraction Mitigation System)
  • EyeSight Driver Assist with Automatic Emergency Steering
  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Centering
  • Frontal Air Bag with Whiplash Protection

In addition to a modest but dapper looking interior with Nappa Leather trimmed seats. Subaru Outback Touring XT models come standard with front heated and ventilated seats, and rear heated seats. In addition to a heated steering wheel, power folding side mirrors, a power moon roof, Harmon Kardom audio system, and wireless phone charging.

The all-weather floor mats are thick and durable ensuring protection against whatever outside elements you may track into the interior.

On the outside, the Touring XT isn’t as flashy as the Wilderness but does offer 19-inch alloy wheels. The model shown in photos sports the optional River Rock Pearl ($395) paint color. It also features steering responsive LED headlamps that move the beam of light depending on where you turn the wheel. This feature has been around for decades but has become more popular in non-luxury brands in recent years. I personally love this feature because it comes handy while driving through dark streets and parking lots, allowing you see where the corner, you’re turning into, while turning.

Testing the 2026 Subaru Outback on the Road

The 2026 Subaru Outback is designed to be an SUV with the heart of a station wagon that can handle school zone morning commutes and the trails at a National Park located across the country. Being that this is the Touring XT, I figured the only way to really test its badge is by putting 1,000 miles on its odometer.

The week I had the Outback Touring XT I drove from San Antonio to Houston, back to San Antonio, and then to Laredo before returning back to San Antonio, TX. Adding up to a clean 1,000-mile journey in less than four days.

On the road, I learned that the 2026 Subaru Outback is as comfortable as it is boxy. The turbocharged engine gets better than decent fuel economy while burning regular gasoline. The rear storage space leaves room for a family style road trip with ease. And, after all these miles, the Subaru Outback never left me feeling road worn.

1,000 miles in under a week is no problem for a modern vehicle. But, the goal of this road test wasn’t to see if it could make the distance, but how I felt after it was done. If a vehicle is too boring, too rough, or even too thirsty, it can leave a driver (and its passengers) feeling exhausted and fatigued.

Thankfully, the new Subaru Outback finds a symmetry in balancing a smooth ride on the road, and a capable experience off-road. It’s the kind of vehicle you can drive clear across Texas in a single day and arrive feeling fresh enough to turn around and drive back.

2026 Subaru Outback Fuel Economy and Performance

During the 1,000-mile road test, the 2026 Subaru Outback Touring XT averaged 26 MPG. That’s a little lower than its EPA rating of 29 MPG highway, but better than its averaged 24 MPG. Its important to note that during the road test I was not refueling using the recommended 91 octane premium fuel. I used regular 87 octane fuel and still averaged over 25 MPG. The premium fuel is recommended to get the full performance from its 2.4L turbocharged Boxer engine.

The 2.4L Boxer engine produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. A CVT sends power to its all-wheel drive system. Oddly enough, Subaru provides the CVT with paddle shifters so the driver can pretend like they are shifting an 8-speed transmission. Ground clearance is measured at 8.7-inches with a four-wheel independent raised suspension.

Subaru Outback Touring XT Lives Up to Its Name

Those looking to save a little cash and don’t need a turbocharged engine can opt for the 2026 Subaru Outback Touring, starting at $45,395. This variant offers many of the standard features as the Touring XT like ventilated seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and power folding mirrors. While the non-turbocharged 2.5L Boxer engine offers less power and torque it makes up for it in fuel economy, averaging over 30 MPG highway.

But, if you’re the type that only wants the best of the best, the Touring XT offers a lot for not that much. Considering the amount of safety features, all-terrain capability, interior space versatility, and turbocharged performance, the Subaru Outback Touring XT starts at less than $50,000. That’s right on the level for the average cost of a new vehicle in the United States.

My only issue with this SUV is one I’m going to have on a lot of vehicles, which is the driver monitoring system that forces a camera constantly scanning your eyes and head. It’s a slippery slope in terms of privacy, but I digress. Beyond that I really enjoyed driving the 2026 Subaru Outback.

Would recommend!
